de Souza Research Projects

The Institute is involved in a variety of research studies associated with nursing education. Read about our studies in progress and completed below.

Evaluation Framework:

de Souza Institute has incorporated a strong evaluation component to assess its educational effectiveness since its inception.  A systematic documentation of user population, a comprehensive set of teaching methods and a detailed outcome evaluation process were implemented.  In 2009, a research framework was developed in consultation with the international advisory committee consultation, which was built on the principle of Interdisciplinary Education for Collaborative, Patient-Centred Practice (Oandasan 2004).1

Guided by the framework, the research and evaluation approach focuses on translating oncology nursing standards, competencies and guidelines into clinical practice.

The following research questions were used to examine systematically the impact of the de Souza Institute educational activities:

  1. How well do de Souza courses advance learner knowledge and confidence in terms of evidence based activities
  2. How do various teaching method(s) meet the needs of different learner populations-across generations, practice settings and geographic?
  3. Do any of de Souza educational activities affect “measurable” clinical practices and subsequently patient outcome?  If so, what are the key “change agents”?
