Mary Jane Esplen is the Director of de Souza Institute, Clinician-Scientist at the University Health Network and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto with cross-appointment to the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing. A CIHR scientist, Dr. Esplen has a strong interest in developing measurement tools and psychosocial and psychotherapy interventions for individuals with cancer and for cancer genetic populations. She leads a research program that focuses on psychological aspects of cancer and on the psychosocial impact of being at high risk for cancer.

Dr. Esplen completed a BScN (University of Toronto) and practiced nursing for several years in mental health. She then completed a Masters of Science in nursing (University of Toronto), later focusing on women’s mental health and the field of psychosocial oncology in her graduate work. Dr. Esplen holds a PhD in medical science, with a specialty in psychosomatic medicine from the Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Toronto. She completed a post-doctorate fellowship in cancer genetics and psychosocial oncology at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute in Toronto.

Dr. Esplen continues to have a practice in psychosocial-oncology, conducting group therapy interventions and providing individual counseling to women and men at risk for, or who are dealing with, cancer or in palliative care. She is past-President of the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology.

Sandra Li-James began her career as a Registered Nurse on The Hospital for Sick Children’s cardiology unit. She later moved to Toronto Western Hospital (University Health Network) to work as a staff nurse in the cardiovascular intensive care unit. Sandra embarked on an educator role in 1994 at Toronto General Hospital; first as an Education Coordinator in central education and later focusing on staff development in Cardiology. Sandra’s passion for staff development and innovative teaching styles created an environment that promoted learner accountability and lifelong learning. She has supported knowledge translation through scholarly and research activities at various forums. Sandra has had a successful track record in leading and mentoring nursing teams to engage in unit projects, including the development of a research culture among practicing nurses.

She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Toronto and a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Toronto at Ontario Institute of Studies in Education.

Jiahui Wong has over 15 years experience in research and program evaluation in pharmaceutical, educational, and health care contexts. Prior to joining the de Souza Institute, she was research manager at the Change Foundation, and project lead of the Provincial Diabetes Strategy at the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Jiahui is currently assistant professor at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. She holds a Bachelor of Medicine from China, an MSc in Epidemiology (Laval University) and a PhD (Institute of Medical Science, University of Toronto.)

Krishna Bhoutika brings over five years of experience in software development and IT project management & integration to the Institute. Before joining the de Souza Institute Krishna worked with the Applications Development and Project Services group at UHN Research where he was responsible for the development of several software projects for research operations. In his role with de Souza Institute Krishna is responsible for developing and managing IT solutions for the Institute’s initiative in knowledge management for oncology nursing across Ontario. Krishna holds a MMath in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo and a BSc in Computer Science from the University of Windsor.

Shanna Brisebois is currently leading the communications at the de Souza Institute as the Senior Special Assistant- Communications.

She has an extensive background in a variety of senior roles in the Ontario provincial government and the federal government in the areas of communications, strategic planning, stakeholder relations and public policy.

Shanna’s experience in the public sector has included leading the communications on- Building Together: Ontario’s Ten Year Infrastructure Plan, Smoke-Free Ontario, the Healthy Eating Active Living Strategy, the Prime Minister’s Taskforce on the Four Western Provinces and the Provincial-Municipal Fiscal and Service Delivery Review.

Shanna has also been repeated called upon by Premier Dalton McGuinty to set up media events across Ontario during central campaigns. She was also part of the team that successfully won the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games bid.

Shanna has been a trusted advisor by international and national companies and organizations in her role as an Associate Vice-President at Fleishman-Hillard’s Toronto office as part of the Public Affairs team.

Shanna holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Communication Studies from Wilfrid Laurier University.

Jocelyn Brown has been a part-time palliative care educator with de Souza institute since September 2010. She was a de Souza Institute graduate student fellow in 2009. Jocelyn also works as a pain and palliative care clinical nurse specialist at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH). This role includes providing clinical consultation to palliative care patients on acute care wards, working in the cancer pain clinic and providing education to staff.  Specific areas of interest include improving the palliative approach to care for the hematology oncology population. Prior to her current clinical nurse specialist role, Jocelyn worked as an RN on both malignant hematology and palliative care units at PMH. She graduated from University of Toronto with her Masters in Nursing in April 2009.  She holds a clinical appointment with University of Toronto faculty of nursing. Jocelyn was the recipient of the University Health Network  2009 Wightman-Berris Academy Award for teaching in nursing.

As a seasoned IT professional, Joy brings to the Institute over 15 years experience in a variety of IT roles ranging from Technical Analyst II at the University Health Network to Manager, Business Intelligence and Decision Support Systems at Eastern Telecoms to Instructor at Ateneo de Manila University.

Prior to joining the de Souza Institute, Joy led major web-based software projects such as Purchase Requisition Online System and Animal Resources System (Animal Inventory module), to name a few.

Now at de Souza Institute, Thomas uses his wide range of skills including web and graphic design, flash development, and audio/video editing to create dynamic and interactive educational tools for online learning.  He is also an integral member of the eLearning design team which are responsible for the overall style of the Institute’s online courses. Donalda has been an oncology nurse for 35 years working in both inpatient and outpatient units. For the last 25 years she has been a primary nurse in lung and GI oncology as well as working in the chemotherapy suite. For the last 10 years she has been the solo instructor for the Sinai C.A.R.E. Cancer Care education series that she and her chemo colleagues developed targeting nurses new to oncology. Donalda has served on the board of directors for the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology for 7 years, 5 of which she was the treasurer. She has done item writing and exam review for the CNA Oncology Certification Exam and continues to be a mentor for nurses preparing for the exam. In 2008, Donalda was nominated by her oncology peers and was one of 100 nurses from across Canada to receive the CNA Centennial Award honoring her work in education of novice oncology nurses.

Laura Rashleigh has been an oncology nurse since 1999. Since receiving her oncology specialty certification she has practiced as a clinical educator, supporting oncology nurses in malignant hematology, medical and radiation oncology, short term surgical care and palliative care at the Princess Margaret Hospital. As a clinical educator, Laura focused on inter-professional person-centred care, oncology nursing professional development and excellence, and leadership for quality, safe practice environments. Her current research explores the phenomenon of grieving as experienced by oncology nurses, with the belief that this is an essential step in supporting nurses’ work with dying patients and bereaved families. Laura holds a BScN from McMaster University, and a MScN from York University.  Laura is currently a board member of the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology (CANO/ACIO).

Tracy Gifford brings over five years of both academic and hospital-based research experience to the Institute. She began her career at Queen’s University where she was an active member of a cardiovascular pharmacology lab. In addition to her research role, she also managed the undergraduate Pharmacology and Toxicology student teaching laboratories. More recently, Tracy was a member of a research group in the Division of Brain Imaging and Behaviour at Toronto Western Hospital that focused on the development of new treatments for Parkinson’s Disease. Her continued interest in health sciences research led her to complete the clinical research associate graduate certification program at the Michener Institute for Health Sciences.

Dr. Richards is the immediate Past-President of the Academy of Canadian Executive Nurses (ACEN) and holds a teaching position at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT). Esther Green is the Provincial Head, Nursing and Psychosocial Oncology at Cancer Care Ontario.  She holds an academic appointment at McMaster University. Esther co-chairs the Steering Committee of the de Souza Institute, funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care in Ontario.

 

Esther is a co-investigator on national and provincial research grants in the area of recruitment and retention, advanced practice nursing roles and patient safety.  She has published in peer-reviewed journals and is the author of chapters related to cancer nursing in Medical Surgical Nursing text books. 

 

In 2004, Esther was the second recipient of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) Award of Excellence in Nursing Leadership.  In 2009 she received the Award of Excellence from the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology.

 

She has worked on boards for the RNAO, the Canadian Association of Nurses in Oncology and the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology.  Currently Esther is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care.

Mary Gospodarowicz is Medical Director of the Cancer Program at University Health Network and Regional Vice President of Cancer Care Ontario. She is also Professor and Chair, Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Toronto and Chief of the Radiation Medicine Program at Princess Margaret Hospital. Dr. Gospodarowicz has a major interest in cancer staging and prognostic factor classification and currently chairs the Task Force on Prognostic Factors for the International Union Against Cancer (UICC) TNM Committee. In the past 10 years she has co-edited three books in this area. She holds an MD (UofT) and specialty certifications in internal medicine, medical oncology and radiation oncology.

Dr. Nelson is also Editor-in-Chief of Nursing Inquiry, a leading international journal. Her current research interests include the investigation of the impact of the Rockefeller Foundation on global nursing in the mid-twentieth century; the assessment of competency in professional practice; the regulation of health professionals; and skilled migration issues and healthcare.

She has an interest in health education for both patients and providers and has been involved in the design, implementation and delivery of a wide range of education programs at the hospital and university level. She holds a number of leadership positions including Director Oncology Education at PMH, and Vice Chair Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Toronto.
