de Souza Fellowships

The field of oncology is changing rapidly and the demand for nurses with specialized skills in oncology continues to grow. To meet this need, Ontario will require nursing leaders with advanced knowledge and expertise to:

  • Develop and deliver education to nurses, patients and families.
  • Identify knowledge gaps, conduct research and translate that knowledge into practice.
  • Create new curriculum to equip nursing graduates to deliver evidence-based, patient-centred care.
  • Provide administrative leadership within organizations and the cancer system.

Supporting Tomorrow’s Leaders

The de Souza Fellowship Program is designed to support tomorrow’s nursing leaders.

De Souza fellowships provide financial assistance to registered nurses in Ontario who are pursuing a Masters or PhD degree in a health, social science or education-related field. The fellowship is intended to support their career development in the fields of Oncology or Palliative Care.

The maximum amount awarded for a single award is:

  • $10,000 for a Masters level applicant up to one year.
  • $20,000 for a PhD level applicant up to one year.

The number and value of awards is determined annually based on availability of funds.

Potential awardees are reviewed in a formal peer review based on the following criteria:

  • Academic marks
  • Current program of study
  • Description of how the program of study will enhance or contribute to practice in oncology nursing or palliative care.
