Pain and Symptom Management Workshop - Toronto (PAMA12MAR12)

This one day workshop explores fundamental principles of pain/symptom management in cancer and other life-limiting illnesses. Case-based discussions are used to apply key concepts to clinical practice.

This workshop is open to all nurses who care for people with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses along the continuum of care across all settings.

Following this interactive workshop, participants will:

  1. Articulate approaches to assessment and management in cancer pain and other symptoms.
  2. Discuss evidence-informed pharmacological interventions to manage cancer pain and related symptoms.
  3. Describe effective communication techniques and strategies in pain and symptom assessment with patients, families, and other health professionals.

Online Preparation Required for this Workshop:

The following will be completed in the de Souza Institute eLearning Centre.

Pre-workshop Participant Survey: The survey will ask about your background and clinical experiences in pain assessment and management. The information will help us better understand the needs of our participating nurses and focus the content of the workshop accordingly. The completion of the survey is required before you can download the workshop handouts.

Pre-reading: Prior to the workshop, it is important that you read a set of key articles which will prepare you for the content of the lecture and clinical case discussions.

Short Quiz: There will be a short quiz associated with the pre-reading.

Activities after the Workshop

Post-workshop Participant Survey: The survey will ask about your confidence in pain assessment and management and satisfaction with the workshop. The information will be compared with pre workshop survey to help us address knowledge gaps. We will also assess the effectiveness of the workshop in improving knowledge and competency in pain assessment and management.

Attendance Quiz: At the end of the workshop you will be provided with an attendance code. Be sure to make note of this code and keep track of it as you are required to take a short quiz that will ask you what the code is at the end of the course.

Successful completion of all of these items is required in order for you to receive a course completion certificate.

This course is offered at no cost but a deposit of $100 is required to save your space for the course. Cheques will not be deposited unless participants fail to cancel their registration before March 16, 2012 or fail to complete the course. Please see our Cancellation & No Show Policy.
