Program:

Being diagnosed with cancer can result in significant quality of life impacts for the individual and his/her family. Potential reactions include: increased stress, distress, depression, anxiety and concerns for the future; and challenges around the emotional impact associated with end of life care.

Cancer is viewed as a chronic disease, since more effective treatments have resulted in individuals living longer. This gives rise to complex survivorship issues, which often have a significant impact on quality of life. These include psychological symptoms and stress around body image and functioning.

At this one-day workshop for front-line nursing clinicians, you will gain knowledge on:

  • Psychosocial aspects of oncology, a special area of cancer care dealing with social, psychological, emotional, spiritual, quality-of-life and functional aspects of cancer, from prevention to bereavement.
  • Assessment of psychosocial, spiritual and quality of life impacts and symptoms.
  • Assessment skills to determine how to intervene and when a referral is required.
  • Methods to address psychosocial issues in oncology and palliative care.
  • The nurse’s role in managing the emotional aspects of cancer care.

By attending the workshop you will become a content expert and are expected to deliver the content of the workshop within six months to staff in your own organization. Support will be provided.
