Pain Workshop

Objectives   Description   Dates and Locations

Pain is the most prevalent and distressing symptom associated with cancer. It's also a complex symptom that is difficult to assess and manage effectively. And while significant evidence and best practice guidelines exist, these have not resulted in a change in practice.

To address this gap, the de Souza Institute is designing and offering a Cancer Pain Management Workshop. The workshop will use a variety of learning approaches to explore evidence-based principles and strategies for assessing and managing pain related to cancer and its treatments.

Cancer Pain Management Workshops: Principles and Practice.

Objectives:
By participating in these interactive cased-based workshops, nurses will:

  1. Explore and practice comprehensive approaches to cancer pain assessment
  2. Understand evidence-based pharmacological interventions to manage cancer pain and related symptoms
  3. Develop skill and confidence in communicating pain assessment findings with patients, families and other health professionals

Description:
de Souza Cancer Pain Management Workshops are tailored to meet the needs of nurses practising in different settings and work environments around the province. One and two-day workshops are offered.

One day workshops employ a combination of lecture- and interactive, case-based- styles intended to translate complex ideas about pain and related symptoms to practical and easy-to-understand practices.

In two-days workshops, day two builds on content explored on day one. Use of simulation with expert standardized patients provides a safe and fun way to "try out" new skills and ideas around assessment of pain, treatment-related adverse effects and complications, and challenging communication scenarios with patients, families and other health professionals.
