Become a Host Site

Who should attend the course?

  • Registered Nurses who are new to administering chemotherapy and biotherapy in any setting in Ontario
  • Registered Nurses who care for patients receiving chemotherapy and biotherapy in Ontario

Participants will receive a certificate upon successful course completion. A chemotherapy preceptorship is recommended upon completion of the course for nurses new to this practice area.

2010 Course Dates:

The course is completed over three days; Day 1 and Day 2 are delivered via video conference, and Day 3 will be held in-person at one of the locations listed below.

February 2010
Day 1 - February 12, 2010 via videoconference
Day 2 - February 19, 2010 via videoconference

Participants must attend Day 3 in-person at ONE of the following locations

  • Day 3 - Sudbury Regional Hospital - February 25, 2010; or
  • *NOW FULL*Day 3 - Trillium Health Centre, Mississauga - March 1st
  • Day 3 - London Regional Cancer Program, London - March 12, 2010
  • *NOW FULL*Day 3 - York Central Hospital, Richmond Hill - March 25, 2010
  • *A minimum of 10 participants per location is required.

    May 2010
    Day 1 - May 20th via videoconference
    Day 2 - May 27th via videoconference
    Day 3 - We are currently accepting applications from local organizations interested in becoming a host site for 'Day 3" of our course. A minimum of 10 participants are required. To learn more about becoming a host site click here.

    Cost: The course is offered at no cost to Ontario RNs who deliver chemotherapy.

    To Apply: Please complete the registration form (PDF) and return it to the de Souza Institute by fax. Additional course requirements and details are included in the registration form. Please register early, as seats may fill quickly. Confirmation of registration will be sent via email to applicants. An email account is required to participate in the course.

    Course Curriculum will cover:

    • Various treatment modalities used in cancer treatment, with emphasis on chemotherapy and biotherapy
    • Factors affecting response to cancer therapy
    • Commonly used agents, their mechanisms of actions, infusion-related issues, and side-effects
    • Chemotherapy orders, calculations and nursing care required for protocols
    • Safety precautions required when handling cytotoxic agents
    • Clinical trials and the oncology RN's role
    • Safety issues and principles
    • Nursing procedures and interventions for administering cytotoxic and biologic agent by all routes
    • Complications of common treatments and toxicity management
    • Symptom management and specific teaching points for patients and families using a person-centred approach
    • Internal and external resources to support patients and families
    • Ethical considerations frequently encountered in practice and approaches to resolving ethical dilemmas
    • Documentation consistent with CCO standards for practice
