Course Description
This is a one-day workshop day on psychosocial care offered by de Souza Institute to nurses across Ontario. Cancer takes an emotional toll on patients and families and causes stress, distress, depression, anxiety and concerns for the future. Nurses should understand the importance of psychosocial care in the cancer journey and be aware of provincial and national evidenced-based tools and interventions which can support patients and their families as they move through the cancer system.
Course Objectives
After attending this one-day workshop participants will be able to:
- Explain psychosocial aspects of cancer care and the need for proficiency in this field for all nurses.
- Describe evidence-based approaches which can be used to address psychosocial issues along the cancer journey.
- Give examples of psychosocial assessment tools that can be used in nursing practice and demonstrate ability to use psychosocial assessment tools and interventions in case scenarios.
Course Requirements
To receive your certificate and a 0.25 credit toward your de Souza designation, you are required to complete:
- Pre-reading before the workshop: Pre-reading of a set of key articles will prepare learners for the content of the lecture and clinical case discussions; a pre-workshop "Participant Survey" will also need to be completed online before the workshop;
- Attend the workshop;
- Assignment after the Workshop: Learners are required to apply the learning from the workshop in their clinical practice and submit online one anonymous clinical case study within seven days post workshop. The online submission will be approximately 400 words in length to include a clinical scenario, tools used for screening/assessment/intervention, results and reflection on successes and barriers. Each learner will also be required to make substantial comments on two postings of their peers.
- A Post-workshop Participant Survey: this will be used to measure participants’ confidence in psychosocial aspect of cancer care and satisfaction with the workshop, and to gather feedback on the quality and the effectiveness of the workshop.
Eligibility: This course is open to any Ontario nurse who provides care for oncology patients in any setting and phase of the cancer care journey, regardless of practice role.
Time Commitment: Approximately 12.5 hours
de Souza Nurse Designation: This course is worth 0.25 credits under Therapeutic and Supportive Relationships.
