eHealth Nursing and Oncology Course (0.25 credits)

Course Description

The purpose of this online course is to expand on the basics of eHealth and Informatics. The course will focus primarily on the issues, challenges, and opportunities related to eHealth and nursing. In order to align with language used by the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO), all information and communication technologies will be encompassed within the term eHealth. Participants will explore concepts in eHealth relating to their own nursing practice specific to oncology. History and trends will be explored as well as future directions within the field.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Explain the history of informatics and eHealth in relation to nursing practice.
  2. Give examples of barriers and benefits of using and adopting eHealth in nursing.
  3. Relate basic moral and ethical principles to issues involving nursing practice and eHealth.
  4. List and explain some future trends in eHealth.
  5. Summarize how to empower patients with eHealth.
  6. Demonstrate the ability to use social media in relation to current nursing practice.
  7. Describe various methods of disseminating information in nursing using eHealth.

Course Requirements

To receive your certificate and a 0.25 credit toward your de Souza designation, you are required to complete:

  1. A pre-test at the start of the course that contains questions relating to content from the RNAO eHealth for Every Nurse eLearning course (accessible via http://rnao.ca/ehealth/education free of charge after initial registration.  Students must obtain an 80% in order to be able to proceed with the de Souza eHealth Nursing & Oncology Course.
  2. A baseline evaluation prior to gaining access to course content
  3. All assigned activities that must also be discussed in the online discussion forum. Upon completion of each of these activities, participants will be e-mailed with a pass or fail mark as well as feedback based on a rubric (which will be shared with participants at the beginning of each course session).  A "pass" mark is required on all assigned tasks.

Eligibility: Offered to any nurse in Ontario working along the cancer care continuum

Time Commitment: Approximately 8 hours.  Week 1 is an introductory week; then, there are 4 weeks of content that each participant will be working through.
