Advanced Pain Assessment and Management Course (0.5 credits)

Course Description

This course will focus on the fundamental principles of cancer pain assessment and management.  A review of the pathophysiology of cancer pain will be followed by modules on assessment, cancer pain syndromes, management and education and advocacy.  The overall goal of this course is to enhance nursing knowledge, skill and judgment at an advanced level related to cancer pain assessment and management.

Course Objectives:

  • Explain cancer pain etiology and pathophysiology.
  • Utilize evidence-based pain assessment tools and management strategies.
  • Recognize the impact of pain on physical, psychological, emotional, spiritual and functional aspects of an individual’s and their family’s lives.

Course Requirements

To receive your certificate and a 0.5 credit toward your de Souza designation, you are required to complete:

  1. a baseline evaluation
  2. all 6 eLearning modules on pain and required readings (this includes posting 2 discussion questions 5 out of 6 weeks)
  3. an in-person workshop at the end of the eLearning component
  4. a post-course evaluation

Eligibility: This course is available to RNs and RPNs; it is highly encouraged that the nurse has at least 4 years of practice.

Time Commitment: Approximately 2 hours per week and an 8-hour workshop

de Souza Nurse Designation: This course is worth 0.5 credits under Treatment & Delivery of Evidence Based Care.
